Hello!! This is so exciting for me to hear Doc Severinsen and all of You! I have been in awe of trumpet since I was young! I am 80 now and when I heard Doc playing "Mac Arthur Park" on Utube I was so moved. That is the Song of My Life!! I do love Mexico I used to watch Doc on the Tonight Show often. also I love the Ritmo de Mi Vida is wonderful! I remember seeing them on a program sometime ago. I studied Spanish for one month in Cuernavaca in 2006.Loved being there and lived with a Mexican family. Forgot I had a home! Thank you for having a space for me to write! I will watch for your programs to see you all!
 My Best wishes!! Betty Sesser

Long overdue; wonderful to hear that Doc's being honored, as well. He still has the greatest sound in recorded history- steely, huge center, one note and you know it's him (most in-tune too, by the way). My idol, always.

Doc must have supported a lot of high school music programs over the years, because he played with my Claremont High School band in 1968 or 1969 in Claremont, California. He was the featured performer, and our band backed him. I never forgot it, and think about it now as I watch him on the Lawrence Welk PBS big band show, and also look at his website.

My mother was a shy woman, and rarely came to my school performances, but she came to see Doc that night. We all wondered what he would be wearing that evening because he had a reputation on the Tonight Show for wearing flashy jackets. Now I can’t remember what he wore, but he looked sharp. I also remember how he looked when he played. He concentrated on his playing in that high school auditorium as intensely as if he were on the Tonight Show, in my opinion. He was a wonderful performer, of course, but what I mainly remembered was that he delivered a strong performance in that little informal setting. That was a true hallmark of a pro in my book. I‘ve tried to be like that in my own career.

I was lucky to have that experience.

I just found this website and this great story after an evening on YouTube of nostalgia of days gone by. Seeing this reminds me of the special guy Doc is...teaching others, inspiring and entertaining us even now. He inspired me in my music and yes, like Tommy, I hate scales!!! Thanks for sharing with kids...you are the best Doc. Now I will try to type in these two words under here so this can get posted......do I have bad eyes or are these things crooked???

I am so glad that I ran across this web site and these reviews. I wanted to comment on the previous one dated January 25, 2011 regarding Doc's visit to a local high school. I also met him at my local high school in Spencer, Iowa in 1965. I was the first chair trumpet, and having watched "The Tonight Show" for years, this was a big event for me. Doc had another concert date the next day in Detroit, and he needed to be driven 5 hours to the Minneapolis Airport to catch his flight. My Dad and I volunteered to do so. Of course, I looked forward to 5 hours of discussion about the trumpet. As we left town Doc said he was hungry, so we stopped at a local truck stop for a burger. He commented on how great it was, and my Dad asked if he liked good beef. Doc raised beef at the time. For the next five hours my Dad and Doc talked about beef. So much for the trumpet. However, two weeks later I went to a convention of state bandleaders. After his talk he said, "Excuse me gentlemen, but I see a good friend back there." It was me! We talked trumpet for awhile. Doc came back the next year, and the first thing he asked was about my Dad. I lost track of him over the years, and I am glad I found him and his music once again. Thanks, Mike Swanson

My wife's surprise birthday present to me was to hear the legend, 'Doc' himself, virtuoso Gil Gutiérrez, and the band in concert in northern California in June 2010--a dream come true! They put on a first-rate show, played their hearts out and had fun doing it. I can listen to their music all day. Heck, sometimes I do.
